Unit 1 Past Simple

In this unit, we are going to study the Past Simple Tense. When to use it, how to build it and some difficulties which may appear. Let's go!

When to use it?

We use this tense mainly for finished actions in the past.

How to build it? (Regular verbs)

AFFIRMATIVE +

We will follow this structure:

SB+VERB+ED+COMPLEMENTS

I PLAYED BASKETBALL YESTERDAY

NEGATIVE -

SB+DIDN'T +VERB (INFINITIVE, NO -ED)+COMPLEMENTS

I DIDN'T PLAY BASKETBALL YESTERDAY

Be careful! Remind not to write -ed in the negative form! If you have written DIDN'T, forget about the -ed

INTERROGATIVE ?

DID+SB+VERB (INFINITIVE, NO -ED) + COMPLEMENTS

DID YOU PLAY BASKETBALL YESTERDAY?

Be careful! Remind not to write -ed in the interrogative form! If you have written DID, forget about the -ed

How to build it? (Irregular verbs)

As you may know, there are irregular verbs in English (as in Spanish) but do not worry! You will learn it as fast as lightning! The main difference you will find between regular and irregular verbs is that we do not add -ED to irregular ones (in the vast majority of cases)

AFFIRMATIVE +

We will follow this structure: I am going to use the past simple form from the verb EAT, that is, ATE

SB+VERB+COMPLEMENTS

I ATE PIZZA YESTERDAY

NEGATIVE -

SB+DIDN'T +VERB (INFINITIVE)+COMPLEMENTS

I DIDN'T EAT PIZZA YESTERDAY

Be careful! Remind to write the infinitive in the negative form! If you have written DIDN'T, forget about the past form.

INTERROGATIVE ?

DID+SB+VERB (INFINITIVE) + COMPLEMENTS

DID YOU EAT PIZZA YESTERDAY?

Be careful! Remind to write the infinitive in the interrogative form! If you have written DID, forget about the past form

Friendly reminder: We always use the same form for all subjects:

Play (Past Simple)                                                     Eat (Past simple)

I played                                                                       I ate
You played                                                                 You ate
He / she / it played                                                    He/she/it ate
We played                                                                  We ate
You played                                                                 You ate
They played                                                               They ate

ATTENTION!

The verb to be is especial and we build it in a different way: here you are.

To be (past simple)

I was
You were
He/she/it was
We were
You were
They were

How to build it? (Verb to be)

AFFIRMATIVE +

We will follow this structure:

SB+WAS/WERE+COMPLEMENTS

I WAS TIRED YESTERDAY

NEGATIVE -

SB+WASN'T/WEREN'T+COMPLEMENTS

I WASN'T TIRED YESTERDAY

INTERROGATIVE ?

WAS/WERE +SB+ COMPLEMENTS

WERE YOU TIRED YESTERDAY?

Be careful! When we are using the verb to be, we do not write -ed, nor did or didn't
